La invasión rusa de Ucrania ha recolocado de manera abrupta las piezas del tablero internacional y está dando paso a un nuevo orden mundial. Por un lado, la UE ha roto lazos comerciales y financieros con Rusia y, por otro, las grandes potencias como China o Estados Unidos se han visto abocados a posicionarse ante la nueva situación bélica. A todo ello hay que añadir la presión migratoria tanto desde el Sur como desde el Este de la UE, derivada de la intensificación de conflictos a escala mundial.

La Bertelsmann Stiftung, junto con el Vienna Institute for Economic Studies, presentan el estudio Keeping Friends closer: why the EU should address new geoeconomic realities and get its neighours back in the fold con el objetivo de analizar el posicionamiento geoestratégico de la UE de manera comparativa con el de potencias como China, Estados Unidos y Rusia. El estudio ofrece, además, una serie de recomendaciones sobre la necesidad de intensificar las relaciones políticas, en relación con la política de vecindad Sur y Este de la UE.

La presentación del informe irá precedida por una introducción sobre la política de vecindad de la UE, a cargo de Maciej Berestecki, de la Comisión Europea, y seguida de una mesa redonda, en la que intervendrán Mira Milosevich-Juaristi, investigadora principal para Rusia, Eurasia y los Balcanes del Real Instituto Elcano, y de Haizam Amirah Fernández, investigador principal sobre el mundo árabe del Real Instituto Elcano.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has abruptly rearranged the pieces of the international chessboard and is giving way to a new world order. As a consequence, the EU has broken off financial ties with Russia and other major powers such as China and the United States have been forced to take a stand in the face of the new war situation. To this we must add the migratory pressure from both Southern and Eastern Europe due to the intensification of conflicts on a global scale.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung, together with the Vienna Institute for Economic Studies, has carried out the study Keeping Friends closer: why the EU should address new geoeconomic realities and get its neighbours back in the fold with the aim of analysing the EU’s geostrategic positioning in the new world order, as well as other powers such as China, the United States and Russia. The study also offers a series of recommendations for the EU to intensify relations with its Southern and Eastern neighbours.

The event will include the participation of the European Commission, which will highlight the EU’s Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood policy and will be followed by a panel discussion with senior experts from the Real Instituto Elcano.
